Farrow Powell

Farrow Powell and his family were one of the first African Americans to make South Bend their home. He moved here with his wife, Rebecca, in 1858. Farrow, Rebecca, and their many children formed one of the longest family lines in South Bend’s history.

They helped start Olivet AME Church — the first African American church in town. The family line continues to this day, with several generations of leaders along the way.
