Rev. Edward Frederick Sorin, a young French priest, came to America in 1841 as a missionary. He and a band of six brothers worked in Vincennes, Indiana, for a year before receiving the opportunity to establish an educational institution in Northern Indiana. They went on to found Notre Dame.
