Robert de La Salle

1679
The first European to travel into what is now known as South Bend and to make the first contact with the Potawatomi and other natives living along the river is generally considered to be Rene-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de LaSalle. Soon after, Jesuit priests arrived, intending to convert the Potawatomi to Catholicism.
