St. Joseph Potawatomi inhabits South Bend

1600

South Bend is inhabited by the St. Joseph Potawatomi, direct ancestors of the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi who have called the Great Lakes region their home for millennia. The Potawatomi settled along the St. Joseph River, a hot spot for trade and commerce, and called the area “Zen Bi Nak” or “Zenba Odanek,” which roughly translates to Ribbon Town.
